I gate crashed a knitters weekend a couple of weekends ago with some friends from around the lower North Island. It was put together by the amazing James from Joy of Yarn in Greytown and featured the most awesome Morag of Vintage Purls. It was a great workshop, teaching toe up socks using Magic Loop.
Here is my little workshop sock.
And this is what snuck in my bag for the trip home. From Left to Right, Rosewood, Diva, Joy, Dolly and Bluhu. All are Limited Editions ones except Joy, which Morag makes just for James’ store.
I came home with some Regia Bamboo as well, and started these.
I wrote up the pattern, but have a few friends checking it over, so will post it soon.
In the mean time, here is more yarn porn.
This one is Patonyle, kettle dyed in pinks and reds.
Patonyle again, in reds and blacks. Both of these are supposed to be secrets, but will reserve the rest of the items associtated with these for another post.
This one is an 8ply, called Mia from Knitworld. Dyed with procion in Burgundy, Fuchsia, Magenta and Bubblegum. Love how this one turned out!
These ones are various cotton and bamboo mixtures. A bit of random dyeing going on, if you can’t tell from the top one, which is what happens when kettle-dyeing goes VERY wrong.
Anyway, it’s always good to find out what works and what doesn’t.
OMG C that is soooooooo scrummy – love it all yum yum yum
I looooove the black and red one 😀 And the second from the left.. oh to have the sock knitting mojo, suck pretty yarn 😛
oooooooo SO jealous! i’m intrigued tho.. your little sock.. that looks like a normal gussetty type heel?! i didn’t know you could do them toe-up, or is it a different type?? (i’ve only done short row heels)
mmmm bluhu… *drool*
The heel is kind of like a combo. you do short-rows for the heel, but you also have gusset increases that are knit in one at a time to decrease back down to your original stitch count by the time you reach the leg.
mmmm…. love Rosewood and Diva!
love ALL of it!!!!
“yarn porn” LOVE IT! haha
Your dying skills are impressive! cant wait to see the rest of the “surprises”
yummy, they all look fantastic. I feel inspired to get dying myself 🙂
Mmm, so much deliciousness in one place
I am going to have to get me some J.O.Y!! The wee man is asking for socks now too;-) (I’m on the home stretch of I6’s bamboos that I cast on 3x the other night, lol.) Have you overdyed your patonyle or was it naked?
Sharon, I bought the beige colour patonyle and then overdyed it with reds, pinks, blacks, etc. I wanted deeper, dustier tones that white or cream would give.
droooooooooool to all that yarn!
Gorgeous! I am seriously envious of all that bootiful sock yarn!! Hard to decide on a favourite lol
OMG that yarn is devine 🙂 I see the Mia dyed up nicely, I’ve got some of the 10 ply one, wander if I could dye that up too. Would dylon cold work do you think?
I would think so. Dylon cold is a cheap version of Procion. Good luck Alison!
[…] 13, 2009 by vanjeffery So, I mentioned I learned Magic Loop and Toe Up Socks in this post. I love knitting socks, but ever since knitting my Wicked I’ve found I enjoy being able to try […]
Hi: I did not understand the sock fever, as they are so cheap, at least here, and 4-5 dpn’s?, oh my, that was a terrible task, now that is autumn I can pamper myself with some I’ve made last summer (your winter). I love your pattern, always looking for a nice lace stitch, and well, now I must learn how is to go to toe up, so, besides my congratulations, I will go to learn the technique. (Sorry my spelling),
Ruth in Chile
Thank you Ruth. I had fun with the pattern and I love how the socks turned out in the end.
Sock yarn should come with a disclaimer which says:
Dangerously addictive!
Toe up is a great way to be sure you use most of your yarn. Plus, it’s really nice to try them on.
Best of luck!
